Reading with Joan - Paving the path to a brighter future

Updated: Jun 17, 2020

Reading with Joan was birth during the famous 2020 Coronavirus pandemic lockdown. Before the lockdown, I was in the process of launching a Social Enterprise – Infohubme. A platform created for children to

· Build literacy network,

· Friendships – building penpals through traditional letter writing,

· Building Cultural awareness and confidence,

· Learning languages, cooking, dance and drama - art and culture

· African Children’s Science Network

· Writing and publishing their books.

My first call was to start a culturally expressive reading club to promote literacy among children in Scotland and beyond. Therefore, as the lockdown timescale increased, I created an online platform where we read, interacted through music and creative art to kids and adults. The feedback to her broadcast has been positive.

On a personal note, I came from a point of weakness, Growing up with dyslexia myself, reading was not one of my fun activities. But as I grew older, I encouraged myself to love reading which led to my various research interest.

After publishing my first book – She Smiled in 2019, I felt the need to support kids after reading about the poor level of literacy uptake by children in Scotland outside the classroom. It was easy for me to come in from the angle of a survivor to encourage other kids.

I also thought to expose kids to learn cultural differences, acceptance, awareness and respect of people different from them; through the pages of books.

For every kid out there - You can be what you want to be and write, publish your own stories as I did. Join us today!
